Birth Photography

Raw and powerful imagery of a transformational time.

Birth is incredible. And while many focus on birth as the beginning of baby’s story, birth is also largely about the transformational journey the birthing person undergoes. Birth really does change you.

Birth is inspiring. It can be empowering and healing. It can bring out all sorts of complex emotions and feelings.

Why Birth Photography is important

Birth happens really fast and really slowly at the same time. Afterwards, you might struggle to piece things together or remember some of the finer details. Birth is where you surrender all control and when you are most vulnerable. It is a time of transformation, whether it’s your first child or third. Every birth is different.

Birth photography serves a multitude of purposes. A few reasons you might like a birth photographer are to remember the events as they happened, to document a truly unique moment in your life, to capture something life changing, to feel empowered and to perhaps use photography as a healing tool.

What I do As your Sheffield Birth Photographer

At a time when you are perhaps most vulnerable and exposed, you may wonder why you would even ever want a birth photographer?

You might be thinking…

Can I trust this person? Will I be comfortable around them? Will it detract from my experience?

And these are all valid concerns. You need to trust in every single person on your birthing team, and that includes your birth photographer. As your birth photographer, I make a point to get to know you beforehand.

Before booking me as your Sheffield birth photographer, we have a free, no-obligation chat either in person, over the phone, or on zoom. This is to help us get to know each other and discover if we’re the right fit.

Once you’re formally booked in (signing a contract and paying the booking fee), we meet in person to chat through your birth questionnaire and your birth preferences. This is essential so that we’re on the same page when it comes to your birth.

We’ll also schedule your free pregnancy mini photoshoot. This is complimentary when booking for birth photography. It’s another chance for us to get to know each other before you give birth.

"We can’t thank Elle enough! My labour didn’t go as planned & happened so quick that Elle only arrived 15 minutes before the birth. I felt very comfortable with her & she advocated for me where she was able. As for the photos we can’t fault them at all they are beautiful & capture the raw emotion so perfectly. I honestly wish I could go back & do it all again. Elle went above & beyond for us, unfortunately my partner missed the birth & she stayed after he arrived to get some more photos. Even though he wasn’t there he has these photos to look back on. If we were to have another baby we would 100% use Elle again. Thank you so much!"

"There are lots of big decisions to make when you are planning everything for your baby and one of the best decisions I made was inviting Elle as our birth photographer. I’m speechless. She captured so beautiful photos and also supported me all the way through the birth. I can never thank you enough for everything. I would highly recommend her as a birth photographer."

FAQ

“On call” means that from 38-42 weeks, my phone is always next to me and on loud for you. It means I don’t take on any other additional photography bookings greater than 2 hours from your birthing location during that 4 week period. I attempt to structure my life in a way that means I can drop everything to be at your side when you need me to be.

Birth is unpredictable. Sometimes birth happens really fast or something comes up that is unavoidable. I do my best to attend every birth I book. Where possible, and if agreed upon in advance, I hire back up cover either to attend your birth until I can arrive or cover the birth on my behalf. Alternatively, your birth booking fee can be used towards a “Fresh 48” or newborn photography session.

To ensure that I have the best chances at attending every birth that I book, I only book one birth per month.

YES! I greatly respect your privacy and will not share any images from your birth unless you say it’s okay. During our preferences chat, we will review the birth questionnaire that you filled out, which outlays different types of images you may or may not feel comfortable sharing. You can change your mind at any time about the images you feel comfortable sharing.

There are so many variables and possibilities when it comes to birth. I try to remain respectful of the birthing space as much as is possible. During our booking and preferences chat we discuss as many of the potentials as we can. A few things to note are…

I will leave the birthing space at any point that you or your birthing partner ask me to.

I cannot accompany you into theatre in UK hospitals.

More specific concerns can be addressed during our chats.
