Travelogue | Eastbourne | Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters

After completing my first month of yoga teacher training, I got a much needed weekend off to spend time with my husband. We decided to take a day trip to Eastbourne to walk the Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters as it was only a short drive away.

We followed this walk route, with a significant shortcut as approaching dark clouds threatened to rain down on us. We went a total of about 7km, cutting up North from the Wreck of Coonata and walking sort of up and diagonally to number 6, shown on the map.

Initially, we started our walk following the alternative route along the beach as it was low tide. It’s not an easy trek and I don’t actually recommend it if you value your ankles and knees. You’re constantly walking over large rocks and boulders that are quite slippery endangering you of falling and twisting your ankle. Personally, I value my knees and ankles, so after getting to the Wreck of the Submarine, we decided to turn back and follow the path above the cliffs.

It’s a lovely walk even under threat of dark clouds. It was surprisingly not that windy, despite the photos of all the windblown trees. It was actually quite calm and still. There was a moment I had to stop on the path and listen. It was so quiet on top of the cliffs. If you listened very closely, you could hear distant cars, but for the most part it was incredibly quiet. I could barely even hear the waves below. To be totally fair, though, my hat covering my ears could have been helping to block out noises, but we’ll just imagine it really was that quiet.
